| Abstract: | Greek truffles, those earthy little treasures quietly growing in the Peloponnese, Thessaly, and Epirus forests, are among Greece's best-kept cooking secrets. Though their great taste and strong roots in local history, they remain rather unknown outside the country. This dissertation sought to look at the causes of the lack of these incredible ingredients on the wider European market as well as possible remedies for that. Originally looking at a specific type of food, it quickly evolved into a study of cultural identity, sustainability, and the emotional power food can have in our life. At the center of this study is the Greek diaspora, those living abroad carrying their food customs with them who use taste and memory to stay near to home. Combining polls with consumer, producer, and industry expert interviews, the study helps one better understand how Greek truffles are seen and what part they could play in the future of Greek food exports. What came to surface was a strong curiosity and pride. Especially among younger generations, there is actual enthusiasm for foods that tell a story—foods that are not only good but also meaningful. Sharing those stories now mostly depends on sites like Instagram and TikHub, which also allow vintage goods to find new markets in a modern society. The road is naturally not without challenges. Greek truffle producers deal with low visibility, exporting difficulties, and the complexity of organic certification among other issues. Still, there is great hope. With the right narrative, smart marketing, and community support from Greece and beyond, Greek truffles could transcend their present niche and become proud champions of Greek nature, history, and creativity. This dissertation aims to show what makes Greek truffles so special—and to show how even something as small as a mushroom might carry the taste and character of a nation on tables all around Europe and beyond. |
