Abstract: This paper aims to examine if and how sustainable development affects the tourism sector. Key issues are related to how sustainability may function as an economic contributor to the tourism industry. This paper presents an overall investigation of the topic and the various underlying facets. The main goal is to discuss the value of sustainability both as a modern trend as well as, a long term investment for the tourism industry. Moreover, tourism is an ever evolving industry closely linked with consumer behavior and the modern way of life which supposes the observation of global trends and culture. Sustainable development is thus an essential factor for tourism planning and development. A huge variety of published documents such as books and articles mainly in their electronic form, were researched to develop the sources used for this paper.
