Abstract: Environmental legislation, especially in the last decade, has changed significantly in an attempt to reduce dangerous environmental problems that destroy nature and human health. In this literature paper we will discuss what environmental legislation is and how it has evolved over the years. Next, we will list and analyze conventions, agreements and laws that have been enacted to protect the environment. We will also compare the laws in Europe with those in America and discuss environmental legislation in developing countries. In the following chapters, we will investigate taxes and penalties that are applied in case of violation of the law and how human behavior and psychology are affected. At the end of the paper, we will come to conclusions and hypotheses about how and if all these measures have had a positive effect on the planet and society.
